初版デザイン

民俗学者でもあった女性作家ゾラ・ニール・ハーストンの小説。
Alice Walker, Toni Morrisonといった黒人女性作家の先駆け的存在。

当時黒人女性に対する世間の風当たりは強く、それは作品中でも描かれおり勿論作者自身も同じである。文壇から見捨てられ不遇のなか墓碑も無い墓に葬られた彼女の墓は後にAlice Walkerによって見つけられた。
