フィッツジェラルドは、「人生最高の時が最初にやって来て、人生最悪の時が最後に来たら気の毒な事だ。」という【トム・ソーヤーの冒険】の著者マーク・トウェインの発言にインスパイアされ、80歳の姿で生まれ年齢と共に若返っていく数奇な人生を歩んだ男の一生を描いた【The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (ベンジャミン・バトン数奇な人生)】を書き上げた。
これは、フィッツジェラルドの代表作であり、2008年に監督:David Fincher, 主演:Brad Pittで映画化された。

アメリカの狂騒の20年代『ジャズ・エイジ』は本作のタイトルに由来している。 (フランスの狂乱の時代『レ・ザネ・フォル』に相当)
