1993年にアメリカの黒人作家として初のノーベル文学賞を受賞したトニ・モリスンの出世作。

赤ん坊でなくなっても母の乳を飲んでいた黒人の少年は、ミルクマンと渾名された。鳥のように空を飛ぶことは叶わぬと知っては絶望し、家族とさえ馴染めない内気な少年だった。だが、親友ギターの導きで、叔母で密造酒の売人パイロットの家を訪れたとき、彼は自らの家族をめぐる奇怪な物語を知り、そのルーツに興味を持つようになる。
