2002年に発表された村上春樹の10作目となる長編小説。
タイトルにあるカフカは、作家のフランツ・カフカからの借用で主人公の名前(偽名)でもある。
英語版「Kafka on the Shore」は、世界幻想文学大賞に選ばれた。

主人公は東京都中野区野方に住む田村カフカ。父親にかけられた呪いから逃れるため15歳の誕生日に深夜バスに乗り香川県高松へ家出する。
もう1人の主人公はナカタ。同じく東京都中野区野方に住んでいた。猫語が話せるナカタは猫探しが得意であったが、「猫殺し」の男を殺害してしまい東京を後にした。

二つの全く別の物語は次第に絡み合い・・・

Kafka on the Shore is powered by two remarkable characters: a teenage boy, Kafka Tamura, who runs away from home either to escape a gruesome oedipal prophecy or to search for his long-missing mother and sister; and an aging simpleton called Nakata, who never recovered from a wartime affliction and now is drawn toward Kafka for reasons that, like the most basic activities of daily life, he cannot fathom.
