アメリカのSF作家オクティヴィア・エステル・バトラーの作品でParableシリーズ2部作の1作目。3作目の構想もあったが、2006年に他界。
「Parable of the Sower」はネビュラ賞にノミネート、次作の「Parable of the Talents」で受賞した。

政治、経済は崩壊し無秩序状態の世界。人々は身を守るためコミュニティを形成しその周りを高い塀で囲っていた。主人公Lauren Oya Olaminaは、コミュニティで暮らしながら密かに新興宗教「Earthseed」を創り上げていく・・・
