初版デザイン

二十日鼠と人間はスタインベックが自身の季節労働者としての経験をベースにして書き上げた小説。世界大恐慌時のカリフォルニア州が舞台の、2人の出稼ぎ労働者ジョージとレニーの悲劇の物語。

当初は『Something That Happened』というタイトルだったが、1785年発表のバーンズの『To a Mouse』に感化され、この詩の一節をタイトルとした。この詩は「どんなに綿密に計画された未来も、その通りになるとは限らない」という非目的論的(dysteleological)な要素を持っている。
